Editor's Note

An interesting month in the Internet world it was. Apparently Dell is now hiring people if they’re hyperactive social networkers. Whilst we're on the topic of social networking a group of Americans are suing Facebook for being too popular. If that doesn't tickle your funny bone then perhaps this will – Maria Sharapova aka Miss Screams is releasing a line of clothing that illuminates when your phone rings. Not sure how that will work when your phone is set to vibrate; maybe something like this?

Getting back to the task at hand, it's the one year anniversary of amag this month and we have a great competition to celebrate. I won’t let the cat out of the bag too early, so read on for more details.

We received some feedback from some customers about our ADSL 2+ 'Non-Enabled' plans so we have provided some more detail on the plans in this edition.

Thanks to the popularity of last months The Ugly Truth competition, ten Amnet customers could again win a double to enjoy a new movie.

Plus, in this months Hot Tips we discuss software that could save your computer from malicious software. Our feature this month is software that detects and removes malware/spyware/adware.

Happy Birthday amag!

We celebrate our first year.

It seems like just yesterday that we launched amag, but this month, we celebrate amag's first birthday. Our mission was to keep customers up to date with what's happening at Amnet and along the way provide a few 'choice cuts' of knowledge and news relevant to the Internet realm.

We hope that we have managed to stay on that course, but we realise that this newsletter is for our customers so why not include more of what you want to read about. With this in mind we're running a competition this month.

We are giving one lucky customer the chance to receive their Amnet Broadband access FREE for twelve months! To be in the running, all you have to do is tell us what you would like to be included in Amnet's amag newsletter. It can be anything you like: a topic, feature, story anything you can think of, but it needs to be something that can be included every new issue of amag. The best suggestion will be included in future amag editions, along with some of the other great suggestions.

To enter, simply email your suggestion to amag@amnet.com.au with the subject – 'amag would be way better if …' and don't forget to include your username. Entries close 18 September 2009 and are limited to existing customers only.  Our decision is final and the prize is not redeemable for cash or transferable.

Good luck!

ADSL 2+ 'Non-Enabled' Update

Last month we announced the launch of Amnet's ADSL 2+ 'Non-Enabled' plans and while many customers upgraded to the new plans, a few customers were unable to due to technical difficulties. There are technical limitations in providing any ADSL service and unfortunately, these also apply to our new plans. To expand, we have included some further details.

What does 95% coverage mean? The 95% coverage refers to our wholesale provider being able to provide services to 95% of the state's population, as WA and SA are big States this doesn't equate to 95% geographical coverage.

Are customers on RIM's and Sub-Exchanges able to connect to this the ADSL 2+ 'Non-Enabled' service?  Regrettably this infrastructure does not allow for ADSL 2+ to be provided at all by Amnet or any other provider.

Given these technical and geographical limitations, the best way to find out what services you can receive is to speak to one of our friendly staff on 13 37 30.

We have some more developments coming up with ADSL2+ Non Enabled, so please stay tuned.

Coming Soon...

... Amnet's Additional Allowance packs!

Everyone loves improvement and here at Amnet we are no different. That's why we know you're going to love this piece of news - very soon we'll be releasing our 'Additional Allowance Packs'.

The Additional Allowance Packs will give you the ability to purchase additional download allowance, whenever you need it rather than having to make a plan change. This new feature is great news for anyone who needs more download quota for just one or two months but don't yet want to upgrade to the next plan. It might be that the kids are home on school holidays and spending more time on the internet. Thanks to our systems wizards, any customers who have been shaped can be returned to full speed within an hour by purchasing an Additional Allowance Pack. Think of it as a get out-of-jail-free card.

We're really excited about this latest development and we hope you are too. Over the next month we'll be releasing this tool through Member Tools (just in time for the school holidays).

A film about blogging...

... and you can win a double pass to see it

Julie & Julia

Last month's competition was so popular, we've decided to give 10 more lucky customers a chance to win a double pass to see Julie & Julia, which was number four at the US box office in August.

Meryl Streep is Julia Child and Amy Adams is writer Julie Powell in the comedy Julie & Julia, the story of how one woman's journey became another's inspiration.

Before Julia Child became the world's first celebrity chef, she was just a woman searching for her calling in life. In 1948 her husband's job has brought them to Paris, and with her indefatigable spirit, she yearned for something to do. She enrolls in the Le Cordon Bleu cooking school and embarks on a journey that will change American home cooking for ever.

Fifty years later, Julie Powell (Amy Adams) was feeling the exact same way.  Pushing 30, living in Queens and working in a cubicle as her friends achieve stunning successes, she seizes on a seemingly insane plan to focus her energies.  Julie decides to spend exactly one year cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking and write a blog about her experiences.

Director-writer-producer Nora Ephron seamlessly melds these two remarkable true stories into a comedy that proves that if you have the right combination of passion, obsession, and butter, you can change your life and achieve your dreams.

To get your hands on a double pass to see Julie & Julia, email your details (name, username and address) to amag@amnet.com.au with the subject Julie & Julia.
The winners will be notified on 14 September.

hot tip

How to purge yourself of the dreaded... Malware!

Last month we touched on Social Network security and very briefly on how to avoid Malware.
This month, we're going to focus on Malware, Spyware and Adware and specifically some of the best software out there to search and destroy the malicious software. We're briefly breaking down the effectiveness of the core features – detection, removal and cleaning – and detailing other useful features.

Before we start, it is probably worth explaining what we mean by Malware, Spyware and Adware. Loosely, these terms refer to malicious software installed on a computer without the users consent or knowledge. Where they differ is their intention. Malware for instance is designed to penetrate a users computer and remain undetected, Spyware is written to do exactly what the name suggests – spy. They are typically designed to spy on users and steal personal information. Adware is less malicious than the former but is still installed without the users consent and will display advertisements, usually in pop-up windows. Typically adware is included in genuine freeware or shareware software and is often used by developers to recoup costs for providing software free.

If you're a Windows user then you have probably come across one of these viruses. If not, here are some common signs that you may have been infiltrated;

  • Your computer is trying to connect to sites you’ve never been to
  • You get pop-up windows whilst you are browsing
  • Software applications start without you opening them
  • Files or directories disappear
  • Search engine results are redirected to paid advertisements
  • Your email software is sending emails you never authored
  • Your computer slows down

Spybot
A pretty good piece of free software that has some handy anti-spyware features and is great value as you are not required to upgrade to access the removal feature.

Main features and how they perform:

  • Good detector of most adware
  • Great file removal tool
  • Cleans program and web usage tracks
  • Registry fixing feature to correct irregularities
  • Online update with latest listings

Spyware Terminator
Easy-to-understand anti-spyware software, this free option offers users some great features the others don't offer for free. For those who like a bit more flexibility, you'll be wise to look at this one as it affords the user the ability to designate their level of protection.

Main features and how they perform:

  • Good detection
  • Good removal
  • Good cleaning
  • Automatically updates lists
  • Scan scheduler
  • Integrated Anti-Virus
  • Great real-time protection

Malwarebytes
According to our sources this is one of the better anti-spyware pieces of software going around. If you want to try it out first the only major feature left out of the free version is real-time monitoring. As a result you'll be able to enjoy one of the quickest, malware scanners free if you're not too concerned about constant protection. The interface is passable but is easy-to-use and with enough of the tools advanced users require, making it an effective anti-spyware software package.

Main features and how they perform:

  • Great detection –quickest in this category
  • Great removal – FileAssassin feature allows user to even remove Windows locked files
  • Great cleaning
  • Multiple drive scanning
  • Context menu scan-on-demand for individual files
  • Multi-lingual support
  • IP blocking module

Ad-Aware
Apparently the world's most popular anti-spyware software, this program combines an easy-to-use interface with some powerful features. It is available free but additional features like anti-virus protection, scheduling and technical support will require the purchase of the Pro and Plus editions.

Main features and how they perform:

  • Great detection
  • Great removal
  • Good cleaning
  • Built-in real-time protection
  • Rootkit removal system
  • External Drive Scanning
  • Fast scanning
  • Automatic list updates

Counter Spy 2.0
One of the best anti-spyware software available and although not free it represents the best value compared to the other options. For its price it's quite intuitive and recommends changes to your computers settings that will improve security. Plus, it is also one of the most efficient performers using the least memory of the most popular anti-spyware software. Another nice feature is the amount of user control, providing the user information on detected spyware and giving them a choice to remove, good for advanced users.

Main features and how they perform:

  • Greatest detection
  • Great removal
  • Good cleaning
  • Integrated Anti-Virus
  • Super fast scanning
  • Scan Scheduler
  • FirstScan scans and removes malware operating system boot

AVG Anti-Virus
One of the most downloaded security software, Anti-Virus Free Edition comes with AVG's award winning anti-virus and anti-spyware engine. It offers an additional – LinkScanner – feature unique to AVG. The free version misses out on some of the better features like Anti-Rootkit, AVG's identity protection, web shield (feature that screens IM chats), firewall and anti-spam. Even without these features it still stacks up well against the others thanks to AVG's extensive virus database constantly updated.

Main features and how they perform:

  • Great detection
  • Good removal
  • Average cleaning
  • LinkScanner – alerts users to malicious links
  • Integrated Anti-Virus
AVG Resident Shield – protects user as files are opened
